Postwar America saw a number of attempts by would-be automakers to produce new -- and often novel-cars. They all failed: Bobbi-Kar, Davis, Playboy Keller, Kurtis, Muntz, and others. To that list must be added B. Robert 'Woody' Woodill's two-seater sports car, the Woodill Wildfire.

Woody always a car nut, went into partnership after World War II with his father, who owned a Dodge agency in Downey, California. In 1948, he bought his dad's share, and with buildings available, he soon added a Willys franchise.

About this time, sports car fever afflicted Woody He wanted a Jag, but his service manager talked him out of it (undependable, costly to fix, etc.).

This car has a modified Chevy V-8 and Turbo Hydra-Made.

Undaunted, he decided to build his own, and to do it largely with Willys parts -- an assembly plant was nearby. So was Glasspar, a pioneer in fiberglass technology. Also close at hand was the Post Body Shop, which built a frame out of 'angle stuff,' as Woody put it. Thus, Woody ended up with a car with a custom-built frame, Willys engine, and a Jeepster front axle and bumpers. He later modified the original Glasspar body with a higher hood, rear deck, and doors, as well as a dummy hoodscoop and neatly integrated Aero-Willys taillights.

The Woodill Wildfire was first seen at the November 1952 Motorama in Los Angeles -- not the General Motors show, but one put on by Petersen Publishing Company, of Motor Trend fame. Interest ran high, so Woody set about getting his sports car into production, both fully assembled and as a high-quality kit car. A rectangular steel frame was devised, with the idea that it accept Ford engines and running gear, although other engines and transmissions could be -- and were -- fitted. With the motor pushed rearward in the chassis, most any engine chosen still left the Wildfire with close to 50/50 weight distribution. The fiberglass body kept weight low -- only 1620 pounds with the Willys engine -- so performance was brisk, even with the little Willys six.

The Woodwill Wildfire was introduced to the world November at the 1952 Motorama in Los Angeles.

The 1953 Wildfire seen here is owned by Vance Ferry of Gurnee, Illinois. It runs with a modified Chevy V-8 and Turbo Hydra-Made, although the original Caddy mill and gearbox have been kept. At the time it was photographed, it had traveled only one mile after a total restoration. Vance points out the Wildfire is believed to be the first production fiberglass sports car and that it received a lot of publicity in the movies: Knock on Wood, Written on the Wind, and Johnny Dark, the last a racing film starring Tony Curtis and Piper Laurie. The Wildfire also received much publicity in Time, Life, Newsweek, and the car magazines.

No matter, the Wildfire never really did become a production car as only about 15 were built, plus 100-300 kits (Woodill claimed the higher number). Part of the problem was price: $2900-$4500; $1200-$1600 for the kits, plus engine, and other components.

Though it certainly deserved a better fate, the Wildfire can be appreciated for the pioneering role it played in using fiberglass bodywork and for setting high standards for kit cars. And also for being a bona fide, high-quality, handsome, and competent sports car.

Owners

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced on April 3, 2013, that it is withdrawing approval of the import and sale of up to 74,000 gas-powered on- and off-road motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles from China. The agency believes that it received either incomplete or falsified certification information.[1]

Former Models[edit]

WF650-T and WF650-C[edit]

The Wildfire WF650-T is a three-wheeled truck. The Wildfire WF650-C is a three-wheeled hatchback sedan. Both are registered with the Department of Transportation as motorcycles. They are powered by a 650 cc water-cooled 4-stroke twin engine. The manufacturer states the vehicles get up to 60 miles per gallon,[2][3] although some dealers have suggested 40–60 miles per gallon is a more realistic figure. Both vehicles are manufactured by Jiangsu Sandi Motorcycle Co Ltd.[4]

Wildfire WF650-T

On April 3, 2013, the EPA withdrew its approval of the import and sale of over 70,000 gas-powered on- and off-road motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles because the agency believes that it received either incomplete or falsified certification information. The EPA issued the vehicle certificates from 2006 to 2012 to two companies which operate as Snyder Technology, Inc. and Snyder Computer Systems, Inc. (doing business as Wildfire Motors Corporation). As a result of a lengthy investigation, the agency believes that the applications for the certificates contained fallacious information and must be voided. All vehicles imported into or manufactured in the United States are required to have certificates of conformity.

WF-120V Total Electric NEV and WF-72V[edit]

The WF-120V is a two-seat coupe manufactured by Shandong Huoyun Electric Car Co., Ltd, located in Zibo, China.[5] The WF-72 V is a four-seat sedan manufactured by Shandong Pioneer Motorcycle Co., Ltd.[6] The WF-120 is powered by an 8.5 kilowatt, 120 volt AC motor. The WF-72 V is powered by an 8.5 kilowatt, 72 volt, AC motor. The styling of the WF-120 V seems to be a copy of the Smart, including lines in quarter panels where the Smart doors are supposed to close.[7] This appears to be a liability and the owner of the Smart design (Mercedes)[8] may force the manufacturer to stop import or take other legal action.[who?] As they are registered as neighborhood electric vehicles, both are programmed by the manufacturer not to exceed 25 miles per hour but can be adjusted to run up to 50 miles per hour.[9][10]

WF250-T and WF250-C[edit]

The WF250-T is a three-wheeled truck. The WF250-C is a three-wheeled hatchback sedan. Both were manufactured by Shandong Pioneer Motorcycle Co., Ltd. as well as Ammar Motor Company, which manufactures right hand drive versions and is located in Karachi, Pakistan.
